Remember how I said that in life you get the test first, and then the lesson? Well, Stage 3 is the lesson. This is where the theory catches up with the experience — and everything you’ve been doing in Stages 1 and 2 suddenly makes complete sense.

Here’s the model: Thoughts → Feelings → Experiences → Habits → Traits → Personality → Identity. Every single layer of who you’ve become was built this way. The operating system. The default programme. And here’s what makes Stage 3 so powerful: the exact same process works in reverse.

We also go deeper into the body in Stage 3. Your beliefs don’t just live in your mind — they live in your physiology. The tightness in your chest when something triggers an old pattern. The heaviness in your stomach when you think about a particular area of your life. Your body has been keeping score. In Stage 3, we’ll start listening to it.

THE SCIENCE

Hebbian learning (Hebb, 1949): “neurons that fire together, wire together.” Every time you run the same thought-feeling-habit loop, the neural pathway gets faster and more automatic. Neuroplasticity research (Doidge, 2007; Pascual-Leone et al., 2005) confirms that this process works in both directions — which is the scientific foundation for everything that happens in Stages 4 through 8.

What you work through in Stage 3

The Thought → Identity chain
Tracing the full sequence from thought to identity — and seeing exactly how yours was built. When you can see the whole chain, you can work with it rather than being run by it.
Forming Habits — tracing the pattern
Looking at how the beliefs and thoughts you’ve identified translated into habits — and how those habits became the personality and identity you’ve been living from.
Belief Listing — validate, update or release
A structured process for sorting each belief: is it accurate and worth keeping? Does it need updating? Or is it a relic from someone else’s story that needs to go?
Fused Belief Systems — recognising the trigger-response pattern
Cognitive fusion is when a belief and your sense of self get stuck together. The sign: same trigger, same automatic response, every time. Stage 3 makes this visible — which is the first step to interrupting it.
Body-Based Check-In
Where do your beliefs live in your body? The areas of tension, tightness or heaviness you locate here become the map for the release work in Stage 5.
