Let's get past the incense and the apps for a moment.
Mindfulness is the capacity to be present with your experience — thoughts, feelings, sensations, the world around you — without being swept away by it. It's the difference between having a thought and being inside a thought. Between feeling an emotion and drowning in one.
That distinction sounds simple. It is not easy. And the research on what it does to the brain, the nervous system, and day-to-day performance is genuinely extraordinary.
Regular mindfulness practice creates measurable structural changes in the brain — increased grey matter density in the prefrontal cortex (the seat of considered decision-making), reduced amygdala reactivity (the part that makes you snap), and improved connections between the parts of the brain that regulate emotion and behaviour.
This is not philosophy. This is neuroscience. And it's exactly why mindfulness is built into every stage of the Self Blueprint.
"Mindfulness for behaviour change is the practical kind — the kind you use at 9am on a Tuesday when everything's going sideways and your old patterns are screaming at you. That's where it matters."
— Andy Fox
There's a specific application of mindfulness that's central to the Living with Intention work — using presence as the tool that creates the space between stimulus and response.
Viktor Frankl said it: between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies the power to choose. Mindfulness expands that space. What used to trigger an automatic, habitual reaction starts to have a pause in front of it. A moment of choice.
That's where real change happens. Not in the planning, not in the intention-setting — in the moment of actual choice. Mindfulness gives you that moment, reliably, on demand.
Combined with HeartMath coherence practices and the ACT-based framework of the Self Blueprint, the result is a way of living that is genuinely responsive rather than reactive. You're no longer being lived by your patterns. You're choosing, consciously, how to live.
Andy Fox is a Certified Mindfulness Coach delivering mindfulness-based programmes through Living with Intention — both in Melbourne and online across Australia. The mindfulness practices inside the Self Blueprint are grounded in evidence, practical in application, and designed to work in the context of a full, busy life — not just on the cushion.
The masterclass includes a live mindfulness and coherence practice. Free to attend.
